  • Download Ubuntu desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu for Raspberry Pi and IoT devices, Ubuntu Core and all the Ubuntu flavours. Ubuntu is an open-source software platform that runs everywhere from the PC to the server and the cloud.

I assume you already have VMWare installed on Mac, here is what I have:

VMware Workstation Pro is a very powerful virtualization solution for Desktop users. You can virtualize many operating systems on VMware Workstation Pro such as Ubuntu/Debian, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and many more. The user interface of VMware Workstation Pro is simple. I really like the simplicity of VMware Workstation Pro.

  • VMWare Fusion Professional Version 8.5.3 (4696910)
  • macOS Sierra (10.12)

Download Ubuntu

Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download and choose the latest 64-bit Desktop version of Ubuntu. Save the downloaded Ubuntu file at some place you can recognize later.

Load Ubuntu ISO file to VMWare

Step 1: Launch VMWare Fusion

Step 2: Click on File – New and choose to Install from disc or image

Note: Initially many people didn’t know where is Install from disc or image to click, YES! entire blue box on the left is clickable!

Step 3. Click on Use another disc or disc image and choose your .iso file with the Ubuntu image.

Step 4: Choose Easy Install, fill in password, and check the box for sharing files with the host operating system.

Step 5: Choose Customize Settings and make the following settings (these settings can be changed later, if desired):

  • Processors and Memory: Set a minimum of 2 Gb memory, but not more than half of your computer’s total memory. The virtual machine can use all processors.
  • Hard Disk: Choose how much disk space you want to use inside the virtual machine (20 Gb is considered a minimum).

Step 6: Choose where you want to store virtual machine files on the hard disk. The default location is usually fine. The directory with the virtual machine files needs to be frequently backed up so make sure you know where it is.

Step 7: Ubuntu will now install itself without further dialog, but it will take some time.

Step 8: You may need to define a higher resolution of the display in the Ubuntu machine. Find the System settings icon on the left, go to Display, choose some display (you can try several, click Keep this configuration when you are satisfied).

Step 9: You can have multiple keyboards on Ubuntu. Launch System settings, go to Keyboard, click the Text entry hyperlink, add keyboard(s) (Input sources to use), and choose a shortcut, say Ctrl+space or Ctrl+backslash, in the Switch to next source using field. Then you can use the shortcut to quickly switch keyboard.

Step 10: A terminal window is key for programmers. Click on the Ubuntu icon on the top of the left pane, search for gnome-terminal, right-click its new icon in the left pane and choose Lock to Launcher such that you always have the terminal easily accessible when you log in. The gnome-terminal can have multiple tabs (Ctrl+shift+t to make a new tab).

Installing software on Ubuntu

You now have a full Ubuntu machine, but there is not much software on a it. Installation is performed through the Ubuntu Software Center (a graphical application) or through Unix commands, typically

To look up the right package name, run apt-cache search followed by typical words of that package. The strength of the apt-get way of installing software is that the package and all packages it depends on are automatically installed through the apt-get install command. This is in a nutshell why Ubuntu (or Debian-based Linux systems) are so user-friendly for installing sophisticated mathematical software.

To install a lot of useful packages for scientific work, go to http://goo.gl/RVHixr and click on one of the following files, which will install a collection of software for scientific work using apt-get:

  • install_minimal.sh: install a minimal collection (recommended)
  • install_rich.sh: install a rich collection (takes time to run)

Then click the Raw button. The file comes up in the browser window, right-click and choose Save As… to save the file on your computer. The next step is to find the file and run it:

The program will run for quite some time, hopefully without problems. If it stops, set a comment sign # in front of the line where it stopped and rerun.

File sharing

The Ubuntu machine can see the files on your host system if you download VMWare Tools. Go to the Virtual Machine pull-down menu in VMWare Fusion and choose Install VMWare Tools. A tarfile is downloaded. Click on it and it will open a folder vmware-tools-distrib, normally in your home folder. Move to the new folder and run sudo perl vmware-install.pl. You can go with the default answers to all the questions.

On a Mac, you must open Virtual Machine – Settings… and choose Sharing to bring up a dialog where you can add the folders you want to be visible in Ubuntu. Just choose your home folder. Then turn on the file sharing button (or turn off and on again). Go to Ubuntu and check if you can see all your host system’s files in /mnt/hgfs/.

If you later detect that /mnt/hgfs/ folder has become empty, VMWare Tools must be reinstalled by running sudo perl vmware-install.pl as above or

Backup of a VMWare virtual machine on a Mac. The entire Ubuntu machine is a folder on the host computer, typically with a name like Documents/Virtual Machines/Ubuntu 64-bit. Backing up the Ubuntu machine means backing up this folder. However, if you use tools like Time Machine and work in Ubuntu during backup, the copy of the state of the Ubuntu machine is likely to be corrupt. You are therefore strongly recommended to shut down the virtual machine prior to running Time Machine or simply copying the folder with the virtual machine to some backup disk.If something happens to your virtual machine, it is usually a straightforward task to make a new machine and import data and software automatically from the previous machine.

Internet Does not Work in Ubuntu. Invoke the VMWare Fusion menu Virtual Machine – Settings – Network and test Share the Mac’s network connection versus Connect directly to the physical network (Bridged).

In this article, I am going to show you how to install Ubuntu in VMware Workstation Virtual Machine. So, let’s get started.

Downloading Ubuntu ISO Image:

First visit the official website of Ubuntu from your favorite web browser. Once the page loads, click on Download.

Now, click on the Ubuntu version that you want to download. I will download the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop version in this article.

You will be asked for a location where you want to save the Ubuntu ISO file. Select a directory where you want to save the Ubuntu ISO file and click on Save.

Your browser should start downloading the Ubuntu ISO file. It may take a while to complete.

Creating a VMware Workstation Virtual Machine:

Once the Ubuntu ISO file is downloaded, open VMware Workstation and click on File > New Virtual Machine…

New Virtual Machine Wizard window should be displayed. Now, select Typical (recommended) and click on Next.

Now, select I will install the operating system later and click on Next.

Now, you have to select the operating system that you will be installing on the virtual machine.

Select Linux from the Guest operating system section and Ubuntu 64-bit from the Version section.

Once you’re done, click on Next.

Now, type in a name for the virtual machine.

You may also type in a path or select a directory where the virtual machine data will be saved.

Once you’re done, click on Next.

Now, type in the size of the virtual hard disk in GB (gigabyte). I will give the virtual machine a 20GB virtual hard disk.

Now, for better performance, select Store virtual disk as a single file and click on Next.

Now, click on Finish.

A new virtual machine should be created. Now, click on the newly created virtual machine from the library panel to open it.

Now, go to VM > Settings.

Now, go to CD/DVD settings and select Use ISO image file.

Now, click on Browse.

A file picker should be opened. Now, select the Ubuntu ISO file that you’ve downloaded and click on Open.

The Ubuntu ISO file should be selected.

Now, go to the Memory settings. Here, 2 GB of memory (RAM) is selected by default. If you want to change the memory, you can either type in the amount of memory (in MB/megabyte) you want for this virtual machine in the Memory for this virtual machine section. Or, you can click and drag the slider up and down to increase or decrease the memory for the virtual machine respectively.

I will set 4 GB or 4096 MB of memory for this virtual machine in this article.

Ubuntu Virtual Machine For Vmware

From the Processors settings, you can change the number of virtual processors, and the number of cores to assign to each virtual processor for this virtual machine.

Usually, the Number of processors is set to 1 and Number of cores per processor can be 1 or more depending on your need.

If you want to enable nested virtualization (virtualization inside virtual machines), then check the Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-v/RVI checkbox.

If you want to use performance tuning softwares in the virtual machine, check the Virtualize CPU performance counters checkbox. For this to work, you must have a compatible processor installed on your host computer.

Once you’re done, click on OK.

Now, click on the button or click on Power on this virtual machine to start the virtual machine.

The virtual machine should start. As you can see, Ubuntu is starting from the ISO file.

At this point, Ubuntu installer should start. Now, you can install Ubuntu on the virtual machine as usual.

Installing Ubuntu on the Virtual Machine:

To install Ubuntu, click on Install Ubuntu.

Now, select your keyboard layout and click on Continue.

Click on Continue.

As this is a virtual machine, I won’t be doing any manual partitioning. I will just select Erase disk and install Ubuntu which will erase the entire virtual hard disk, create all the required partitions automatically and install Ubuntu.

If you need to, you can do manual partitioning as well.

Once you’re done, click on Install Now.

Click on Continue.

Select your time zone and click on Continue.

Now, type in your personal information and click on Continue.

Ubuntu installer should start installing Ubuntu. It may take a while to complete.

At this point, Ubuntu should be installed on the virtual machine. Click on Restart Now.

Your virtual machine should restart into the Ubuntu login screen. Login to Ubuntu with your password as usual.

Ubuntu should be running smoothly on the virtual machine.

Installing Open VM Tools on Ubuntu VMware Virtual Machine:

Now, you should install Open VM Tools on the Ubuntu VM for improved performance and features (such as clipboard sharing, auto guest resizing, better graphics support etc.).

First, open a Terminal and update the APT package repository cache with the following command:

APT package repository cache should be updated.

Now, install Open VM Tools on the Desktop version of Ubuntu with the following command:

NOTE: If you’ve installed Ubuntu server version, then install Open VM Tools with the following command:

Now, press Y and then press <Enter> to confirm the installation.

Open VM Tools should be installed.

Now enjoy Ubuntu. Don’t be afraid to try out new things. As it’s a virtual machine, any damage you do to this Ubuntu virtual machine will not affect your main operating system (installed on the host computer).
