While Apple’s full-size keyboards have dedicated Home, End, Page Up, & Page Down keys, their compact keyboards (such as those found on laptops) do not. Instead, they double-up the function of some keys. Apple does not label the second function of all the keys, so not everyone realizes their full potential!

In this video we show you different function key shortcuts for your Mac keyboard. These are useful if you don't have the end, home, page up/down, and delete. Open the menu for the selected button. Alt+Down arrow key. When a menu or submenu is open, move to the next command. Expand or collapse the ribbon. Open the context menu. Or, on a Windows keyboard, the Context key (between the right Alt and right Ctrl keys). A) Press Windows key + C, click search. B) Type On screen keyboard in the search box. C) Click on On screen keyboard tile and see if the keys work. If the keys are working fine, then I would suggest you to check using a different keyboard to find out if it’s a hardware issue with the current keyboard. How to Use Arrows on a Mac more Effectively. Although you will not find the “Page Up” or “Page Down” keys, you can use the FN key along with the up or down arrow to get the functionality of the Page Up and Page Down buttons. Fn + Up/Down Arrow. The fn (“function”) key on modern Apple keyboards is in the lower left corner.

When you hold the function (fn) key and press certain keys on Apple keyboards, it makes those keys act differently. It activates their alternate function. Here are the common ones you should know:

  • Page Up is fn-Up Arrow
  • Page Down is fn-Down Arrow
  • Home is fn-Left Arrow
  • End is fn-Right Arrow
  • Enter (in the number pad of a full keyboard) is fn-Return
  • Delete Right (also called Forward Delete) is fn-Delete

How to Use Arrows on a Mac more Effectively

Although you will not find the “Page Up” or “Page Down” keys, you can use the FN key along with the up or down arrow to get the functionality of the Page Up and Page Down buttons.

The fn (“function”) key on modern Apple keyboards is in the lower left corner. If you hold it down and then click on the up arrow, the open page (for example, in the browser) will go up by flipping through the visible part of the screen for each press, in the same way as by pressing “Page Up”.

A page down effect can be achieved on the same principle. Hold “fn” and click on the down arrow.

The method works on all Apple keyboards – both on portable (Apple Wireless Keyboard) and full-size (wired MB110 with digital block). On the MB110 there are special keys “Page Up” and “Page Down”, but the combination “fn” + “Arrow” will work there.

Bonus: In case you need to be instantly at the top or bottom of the page, use the “fn” + “Left Arrow” and “fn” + “Right Arrow” keys, respectively.

In the browser, it is very easy to achieve “Page Down” functionality. Just press the spacebar on the keyboard and the open page will go down.

Not everyone knows that with a space (as well as another key) you can call the Page Up effect. To do this in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, just hold down the Shift key on the keyboard and press the spacebar.
